Information as provided by our collecting friend, Ron Greene:
This club was incorporated as the Loggers Club, Limited in 1919. It was a company, a proprietary club, meaning that it was owned by a proprietor, and was not operated or owned by a society. According to documents on the company’s file (BC04356) it was not actively engaged in business from April 26, 1932. July 27, 1933 new shareholders bought the company. These were Will Ellis and Stanley Victor Smith. On Nov. 16, 1933 the name was changed to the Arctic Club Ltd. In January 1934 R. Mitten and Ken Stauffer became shareholders and on April 25, 1934 became the company’s directors. They were involved with the club until their deaths in the 1970’s and other members of the families carried on. From 1935 the club was at 718 W. Pender, in 1948 it moved to 724 W. Pender (or the address was renumbered) and it was there until the 1960’s. In 1966 there was no Arctic Club listed in the city directory and no 724 W. Pender. The company filed annual reports until 1984, so it may have operated elsewhere, but I haven’t found them. The company was dissolved in January 1988 for failure to file annual reports. It was a licensed gambling club. I have been told that there were as many as 48 of the card clubs in B.C. but that they were phased out over a two year period in the early 1990’s in favour of the casinos.
